Changeling Software started in the back office of a Dunkin’ Donuts, with Pete and Andrew handling absolutely everything design, art, coding, and packaging, sales, and distribution. On top of all this, the over tech design came from the board game Traveller. The idea of having moons came from Star Wars, where the final battle takes place over a moon of Yavin. He also wanted to incorporate some of the strategic elements of games like Star Fleet Battles, Ogre, Car Wars and Civilization.

The game appears to have been mainly the brainchild of Pete, who had played all the great 4X games, notably Reach for the Stars, but Galaxy and Imperium Galactum, among others. Update: I wrote to Pete some time ago and got some more background… A slew of never-fixed memory leaks doomed it, with players giving up in frustration on a game you could tell was amazing if it just didn’t crash. Even with all these facets the game was still easily playable due to its simple windowed interface. And yet, today, the game remains pretty largely unknown, at least the original Mac version. It blended a superb planetary engine, a good economic model, great ship design, some trade, diplomacy and spycraft, tactical combat, research, you name it. It came close to being the game, the game that got it all right and would be the benchmark for all others to be measured against. Pax is one of the great untold stories of the industry. There’s been a lot of empire building games over the years, but Pax Imperia is one the first that really tried to do it all
